Restoring Facial Balance With Rhinoplasty

Posted August 24, 2015 in Rhinoplasty

Natural deformities or injury to your nose can detract from your natural beauty. It is amazing how changes to the structure of your nose can enhance your facial appearance. Many people underestimate the importance of subtle restructuring. In most cases, it is smaller changes to the nasal structure that have the most dramatic impact. Creating a nose that is natural in appearance and restores facial balance does more to enhance your beauty than a complete overhaul of your nasal structure.

What Affects Facial Balance?

When your nose is too small or too large for your face, it creates an unbalanced facial appearance. By reshaping the nose to match the rest of your features, your results appear natural and dramatic. Common structural deformities that can cause facial imbalance include:

  • A large nasal hump
  • A drooping nasal tip
  • An elongated, “beaky” nose
  • A bulbous nose
  • A wide nasal bridge

Correcting Nasal Deformities

Dr. Spies performs rhinoplasty to correct nasal deformities. The procedure involves separating the soft tissues from the cartilage and bone structure that support the nose. Large nasal humps can be removed by contouring both cartilage and bone. At the same time, cartilage is removed, repositioned, and/or added to sculpt a nose that best suits your facial features.

Dr. Spies performs a scarless rhinoplasty by using a closed technique whereby he creates all the incisions on the inside of the nasal passages. This technique leaves no visible scarring. However, not every patient is a candidate for closed rhinoplasty.

For patients who have an issue that affects the nasal tip, Dr. Spies usually performs rhinoplasty using an open technique whereby he makes a small incision at the base of the columella. In other cases, an open technique may be necessary to provide clearer exposure of the supporting structures to reshape the nose properly. The scar will become virtually unnoticeable over several months.

Facial Fillers to Help Restore Balance

Hollow cheeks and loss of volume around the lower eyelids can also contribute to an unbalanced facial appearance. Gaunt features can cause your nose to appear larger and disproportionate to your face. Facial fillers or fat injections can restore lost volume and help restore a better facial balance. Dr. Spies can perform these procedures at the same time as your rhinoplasty surgery. Fillers can also be used to smooth nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the mouth to erase years from your appearance.
