EYELID SURGERY (“BLEPHAROPLASTY”)
An eyelid lift, or “blepharoplasty,” is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. This popular procedure removes excess fat and skin from the eyes to restore a refreshed facial presentation. Our board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Spies, regularly performs blepharoplasty for individuals who seek a more youthful face.
EYELID LIFT CANDIDATES
Ideal candidates for the eyelid lift procedure are in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the procedure. Adults of all ages who wish to eliminate excess skin, bags, and puffiness around the eyes can benefit from eyelid surgery. Patients with excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids that causes impaired vision are ideal candidates for upper eyelid surgery, which may be covered by medical insurance.
An eyelid lift can be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Depending on the patients’ needs, Dr. Spies can perform either an upper or lower blepharoplasty. Often times these procedures are combined to attain optimum results.
Upper Eyelid Lift – An inconspicuous incision is made along the natural crease in the upper eyelid. Muscles and tissue are tightened and fat deposits are repositioned, and excess skin can be removed.
Lower Eyelid Lift – A subtle incision is made just below the lower eyelashes through which excess skin can be excised. An alternative technique is the transconjunctival incision inside the lower eyelid to avoid any noticeable scarring, and excess fat can be removed or redistributed through this incision.
Following the completion of surgery, patients may experience bruising and irritation in the eye area. A lubricating ointment can be applied to minimize side effects and aid in the healing process. Patients can usually return to work about a week following surgery, but strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for a 3 to 4 weeks.
As with any surgical procedure, there is always a risk of complications. Eyelid lift risks include temporary blurred vision, infection, bleeding, swelling at the corner of the eye, and dry eyes. To ensure that you are getting the safest and most effective outcome, it is important to choose a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
An eyelid lift is a very safe and effective procedure that gives the eyes a more youthful appearance. Patients are very pleased with their new look and often develop a renewed sense of self-confidence. Results generally last for many years and can sometimes be permanent.
