Tummy Tuck Scars

Posted June 19, 2013 in Tummy Tuck Category

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed today. However, a question that many patients often ask relates to the scarring that may result from the operation. The truth is that every type of surgery gives you scars and a tummy tuck is no different. Conversely, how noticeable the scar appears to the human eye depends on various factors, such as the technique used and the surgeon’s experience in performing abdominoplasty.

Tummy Tuck Techniques

A variety of methods can be used for the tummy tuck procedure in order to fit the desires and needs of different patients.

With a traditional tummy tuck procedure, loose or hanging skin and excess fatty tissue in the entire midsection are addressed. An incision is made horizontally across the bikini line from hip to hip. An experienced surgeon can strategically place the incision just above the pubic line so the scar can be easily covered by underwear or a bathing suit. Additionally, an incision may be made around the navel to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen. Tightening of the abdominal wall muscles is also performed to further improve the contour to the tummy.

A mini tummy tuck is designed to improve the appearance of the lower abdominal area. Like a regular tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck involves making an incision horizontally across the bikini line from hip to hip. However, since the skin is only lifted to the umbilical region, there is no need for a second incision to be made around the navel.

Tummy tuck surgery is often combined with other procedures, such as liposuction, to additionally contour the abdominal region and the rest of the body.

Caring for Your Scar

To diminish the appearance of scars, it best to always wear a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and cover your scars whenever possible. Wearing silicone pads over the scars and massaging with vitamin E oil or aloe vera oil during recovery can further improve the condition of the scar by speeding up the healing process.

Choosing Your Surgeon

The surgeon you choose has a profound effect on the ultimate appearance of the scar after your procedure. A board certified surgeon with extensive knowledge and experience in performing tummy tuck surgery will be able to greatly reduce the risk of noticeable scarring.
