Breastfeeding with Breast Implants

Posted September 30, 2012 in Breast Augmentation, Mommy Makeover Category

If you have breast implants and want to nurse your baby, or if you are interested in undergoing breast augmentation prior to giving birth, there are numerous questions you may have about limitations or abilities. One very important and common question among women is:

Can I breastfeed if I have implants?

The good news is whether you have saline or silicone implants, neither one should interfere with breastfeeding. Many women worry that the silicone gel can leak into their breast milk if they have a rupture in their implant (sometimes undetected). Though consistent studies have shown that the molecules in silicone are too large and dense to transfer into the breast tissues or milk ducts. Saline implants are also said to no pose any harm while breastfeeding; should a saline implant leak or rupture the saline will be reabsorbed by the body.

However, women should be fully aware that there is no guarantee or full assurance that if they have breast implants, they can breastfeed. Every woman is different, and there are multiple factors that play into whether or not a woman can do so, such as the location of the surgical incisions. For example, women who receive a breast augmentation through their areola or around their nipple may have malfunctioning of the milk ducts. The truth is you will not know whether or not you are capable of breastfeeding with your implants until you try to. Some women have problems with their nipples naturally or because of having undergone another kind of breast surgery – both which may inhibit their ability to breastfeed.
