Diet and Exercise Can’t Spot Reduce Fat, But Liposuction Can

Posted December 8, 2014 in Healthy Lifestyle, Liposuction Category, Uncategorized

In today’s society, maintaining good health and an attractive physique are big priorities for many. We all know that eating healthy and exercising help achieve these goals. Even if you’re in good shape, chances are there is still at least one part of your body that you wish you could improve. While various exercise regimens claim to be able to “spot reduce” certain areas of your body, they often fail to produce satisfying results.

Contrary to what you may have read or heard from others in the past, spot reduction from exercise rarely works, and here’s why…

Your muscles are primarily responsible for burning fat cells in your body. These fat cells contain complex chemical compounds (triglycerides) that must be converted into glycerol before your muscles can use them for energy. However, the triglycerides in your abdominal fat are identical to the triglycerides in the fat of the rest of your body, meaning they are all converted to glycerol at the same rate. Building muscle in one area does not specifically reduce the fat in that area; the muscle converts fat from all areas of the body to use for energy. This makes it nearly impossible to spot reduce fat from specific areas of your body.

Spot Reduction With Liposuction

Fortunately, Dr. Robert Spies offers liposuction at his Scottsdale practice to help men and women of all ages eliminate stubborn fat deposits from their body. This procedure is performed by inserting a cannula (thin hollow tube) underneath the skin to permanently remove the fat cells and achieve more attractive body contours. Dr Spies performs both traditional as well as ultrasonic liposuction, which also has the advantage of some skin tightening.

Liposuction can be performed on the following areas of the body:

  • Arms

  • Chest

  • Back

  • Abdomen

  • Love handles

  • Thighs

  • Knees

These procedures are performed at an outpatient surgical center under an anesthetic.  Postoperative pain is well controlled with medication and the use of compressive garments.  Everyone sees a significant improvement immediately that will last years as long as they maintain good health and a normal weight.
