How to Maintain Results After a Body Contouring Procedure

Posted October 15, 2013 in Healthy Lifestyle, Uncategorized

Undergoing a body contouring procedure such as liposuction or a tummy tuck can produce very rewarding results. Although these types of treatments permanently remove fat cells, it does not mean that your body is less likely to store fat. In fact, the remaining fat cells that exist in your body will expand to fill the void of the eliminated cells if you gain weight after surgery. To maintain your “new look,” it is important that you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Following a good diet and exercise regimen can be difficult and, at times, completely overwhelming. Therefore, here are some simple tips that can greatly help you hold on to your new physique:

Reduce Portion Sizes

Many people overestimate the portion size of the foods that they eat. To ensure that you are consuming the correct amount, always be sure to check the serving size on the nutrition labels when preparing your meals.

Eat Fewer Carbohydrates

Scientific studies now show that carbohydrates (not fats or proteins) such as breads, sweets, sugary drinks, and processed foods cause us to store fat and gain weight. Too many carbs can also lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Therefore, eat more protein and healthy fats to curb your appetite for carbs.

Include More Fruits and Vegetables

Try to include at least 3 servings of both fruits and vegetables in your diet every day. Berries are some of the healthiest fruits because they contain high amounts of antioxidants. Add vegetables to morning omelets for a healthier breakfast, and eat carrots and other veggies as snacks between meals instead of potato chips or pretzels.

Drink More Water

Surprisingly, two thirds of Americans don’t drink enough water. In the past, consuming eight 8-ounce glasses of water was said to be sufficient. However, various factors, such as your body weight and activity level, play an important part in how much water you should really be drinking. Exercise at Least 30 Minutes a Day

Once you are fully recovered from your body contouring procedure, it is important that you exercise on a regular basis. Generally, moderate cardiovascular activity (3 to 4 days a week for at least 30 minutes each day) should be sufficient. You can mix up your workouts by alternating between running, swimming, and cycling to keep your routine interesting. Weight training (resistance training) is also important to maintain muscle tone.
