Breast Implant Position Options

Posted October 7, 2012 in Breast Augmentation

Over or under? That is the question. If you are considering breast augmentation it is best to learn if subglandular or submuscular placement will meet your aesthetic goals.

Subglandular refers to placement under your breast tissue and over your chest muscle. With this implant location, breast implant placement is more pronounced, so this is usually for patients who desire the look of a more dramatic enlargement. The benefits of subglandular implant placement are that it allows for a larger implant to be placed, offers more pronounced or visible cleavage, and creates a higher lift to the breasts. Also, with subglandular placement there is generally a shorter recovery time as compared to the submuscular placement. Lastly, if there is ever a complication with your implant, the subglandular option allows for easier access to re-operate if necessary. The disadvantages of this particular placement is that it poses a higher chance of implant rippling and capsular contracture.

With the submuscular placement method, the implant is placed under, or behind, the chest muscle. This is a great option for women who are petite with very little breast tissue or for those who do not desire an extreme enlargement. Women who want a more natural appearance and feel to their breasts generally choose submuscular. With this placement option, there is a reduced risk of rippling and capsular contracture because the implant is more securely placed behind the muscle. Also, there is greater visibility of the breast tissue during a mammogram, as compared to the subglandular placement. Disadvantages of submuscular placement is that it limits the size of the implant used. Also, recovery time is longer than the process of subglandular placement, because it is more invasive.
