Pros and Cons of Breast Augmentation Incisions

Posted February 6, 2013 in Breast Augmentation, Home

A breast augmentation is a very rewarding procedure that not only improves women’s figures, but also improves their overall well being. During your consultation I will discuss, among other things, the type of incision that will be performed during your breast augmentation. At my Scottsdale/Paradise Valley practice, I offer several incision options and am happy to perform whichever incision is best suited for you.

Types of Incisions

When performing a breast augmentation, there are three different types of incisions that can be made and each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Periareolar Incision – An incision will be made around the lower half of the areola (the dark colored skin surrounding the nipple) border then moving under the skin towards the lower crease of the breast where the implant is placed behind the pectoralis muscle. The placement of the incision around the areola provides a less noticeable appearance of scarring. In rare cases, a patient may lose sensation around her nipple or be unable to breast-feed when using this incision site.

Transaxillary Incision – The incision is made under the arm in the natural fold of the armpit. A channel is created from the armpit to the breast and the implant is placed through the armpit behind the breast and pectoralis muscle. This incision is not popular with my patients in that there is a slightly higher chance of abnormal scarring from placing the incision in the hair-bearing, sweat gland area of the armpit.

Inframammary Incision – This incision is made along the bottom on the crease of the breast where a pocket is made for the implant to be placed. The inframammary incision gives me the greatest accuracy and visibility to where the implant is positioned beneath the pectoralis muscle. Even though the incision leaves a scar, it can be concealed underneath a bra or bikini top.

There’s no such thing as a “wrong” incision as all of these techniques are used regularly in breast augmentations. Even though you may favor a certain incision, it is best to review all of your options and discuss your choices with a surgeon who is board-certified in plastic surgery.

I have regularly performed breast augmentations using these various techniques for over 26 years and am certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. To schedule a consultation with me, please feel free to contact my Arizona practice at (480) 890-0600 today.
