Prejuvenation: Preventing the Signs of Aging Before They Appear

4 Minute Read:

Wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity are some of the most frustrating cosmetic concerns that come with age. However, as many young adults and middle-aged men and women are realizing, you don’t need to be in your older years to see these skin issues appear on the face.

Not only do age-related skin concerns make you look much older than you are (and definitely older than you feel), but they can cause you to feel self-conscious about your appearance. And while there are plenty of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures that can help to minimize the presence and appearance of these skin concerns, why wait until they have already set in?

With prejuvenation (a combination of prevention and rejuvenation), you can proactively combat these unsightly signs of aging before they appear.

Below, we will explore prejuvenation along with some of the best nonsurgical treatments to help you continue to look youthful and healthy!

Who Are the Best Candidates for Prejuvenation?

Collectively, younger Millennials and older members of Gen Z (those men and women born in the mid 1980s to late 1990s) find themselves concerned with the effects of aging.

Whether it be the prominence of digital photography and selfies or simply the worry of looking older sooner in life, many people want to maintain their youthful appearance, and they are achieving this with the use of cosmetic procedures

While there are numerous plastic surgery options that can help men and women get rid of unsightly skin concerns on the face (such as facelift surgery, brow lift surgery, or eyelid surgery), the reality is that you don’t want to undergo a surgical procedure until the effects of age have fully set in.

Because of this, prejuvenation treatments offered by Dr. Spies are nonsurgical and meant to delay signs of aging from appearing.

What Prejuvenation Treatments Are Available?

Injectable Treatments

One of the best ways to proactively address skin concerns in the face is through injectable treatments. Whether you choose to have dermal filler or neurotoxin injections, these treatments can help you achieve smoother, more youthful facial skin and contours

Dermal Fillers

Dr. Spies offers several different injectable filler options. Each filler works to target concerns on different areas of the face.

Dermal fillers can essentially be broken down into two categories. The first type of filler has hyaluronic acid (HA) as its active ingredient. Some of the most trusted names in HA fillers include the JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® fillers, and the RHA® Collection of fillers. HA works by attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. This helps to prevent wrinkles and fine lines from forming, while also helping to create a fuller and more voluminous aesthetic to the treated areas.

The second type of filler uses poly-L-lactic acid, which helps to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin. The most notable of this type of filler is Sculptra® Aesthetic, which can help to proactively keep the facial skin smooth from wrinkles and other skin creases.

At your consultation, Dr. Spies will be able to hear your cosmetic goals and concerns and evaluate your condition to determine which filler is best for you.

Neurotoxins

One of the most common misconceptions about facial wrinkles is that all wrinkles are caused by age.

Instead, many wrinkles are dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repetitive muscle contractions (often occurring because of facial expressions and squinting). This means that men and women of any age can struggle with wrinkles.

To treat dynamic wrinkles, neuromodulators (neurotoxin injections) can be used. Two of the best options for treating these wrinkles (or preventing them) are BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®

For each of these treatments, the solution (consisting largely of botulinum toxin-A) is injected directly into the targeted muscle. The neurotoxin blocks signals from the nerves to the brain, essentially paralyzing the muscle temporarily.

Because the muscle isn’t contracting, no dynamic wrinkles can form.

Noninvasive Options

In addition to injectable treatments, Dr. Spies offers several noninvasive skin care treatments that can help postpone the signs of aging.

Laser Treatments

Laser light energy can help correct issues in your facial skin, while helping to prevent issues from forming. Whether you struggle with skin blemishes (including sun damage and pigmentation issues) or you want to achieve tighter, more youthful skin, the good news is that laser treatments can give you the skin aesthetic you desire.

Laser treatments, including the PhotoFacial and Erbium Laser Resurfacing treatments, work by heating the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production. After your treatment, you should be left with healthier and clearer skin.

Skin Rejuvenation

There are numerous skin rejuvenating treatments that you can choose to have. From a HydraFacial® treatment, which cleans, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin, to microneedling, dermaplaning, or skin peels, Dr. Spies can help keep your skin looking youthful and blemish free.

There’s no need to worry if you are starting to show those dreaded signs of aging. Instead, you can find yourself smiling, whether you are looking at your reflection in the mirror or you are at a social gathering.
