First Step
A personal consultation is the first step for every patient considering breast surgery of any kind. Because a lot depends on your individual circumstances, come prepared to give Dr. Spies information about the following:
Types of Breast Surgeries
You will probably have one of the following procedures in mind.
Surgery Facts Breast Enlargement can be performed under general or local anesthesia. The surgical procedure involves making a small incision either under the breast crease or around the areola. Then the surgeon creates a pocket into which the implant is inserted. This pocket is made either behind the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle. Dr. Spies will provide you with information on the latest implant research at your first appointment.
Breast Reduction is nearly always performed under general anesthesia (in which you sleep) and on an average takes from 2-3 hours. The surgical procedure involves removing excess glandular tissue, fat and skin and moving the nipple and areola into their new position.
Mastopexy usually is performed under general anesthesia and takes on an average of 2 hours. The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast from which excess skin is removed. The nipple and areola are moved to the higher position. Breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants are often performed at the same time in order to add volume and upper fullness.
Good News
The good news is you can look forward to a new look that should bring you greater freedom with fashion and may give your self-image a boost as well. Dr. Spies will help you understand more about the procedure and the recovery period.
