A smoother and more even-toned complexion can be attained with laser resurfacing. The best candidates are those with fair, healthy and non-oily skin. You will see results for conditions such as:
Laser resurfacing procedures use a laser beam (energy) to vaporize the upper layers of damaged skin. The depth of penetration is accurate due to computer control of the beam. During healing, new skin cells grow from the remaining deeper layers to give you smoother and tighter looking skin.
Other options are available and will be discussed by Dr. Spies including Retin-A treatments and chemical peels. These are lighter resurfacing procedures that may need to be repeated in the future but do offer quicker recovery times.
Laser resurfacing is performed under general anesthesia at an outpatient surgical center. Sometimes, sedation anesthesia can be used if only parts of the face undergo the procedure. It usually takes 7 to 10 days to complete the resurfacing process. For the next 3 to 4 weeks, your skin will look bright pink or red which will fade over several months. Makeup can be applied to conceal the redness after the first two weeks.
Most patients will see a significant difference in the tone and texture of their skin. Although the results will be long lasting, Dr. Spies does recommend continuation of skin care products and sun protection to maintain the results.
Visible signs of facial aging occur as a result of sun exposure, life style and hereditary factors. Skin will slowly lose structure and volume which results in the development of wrinkles and loss of facial fullness: Dr.Spies does offer some excellent solutions to these problems. Injectable fillers can plump thin lips, correct wrinkles and improve recessed scars including acne scars. They also soften facial lines and creases including the line from your nose to the corner of your mouth (nasolabial fold). Our office registered nurse, Carol, has over 13 years of experience with dermal fillers and brings her expertise and fantastic results to our patients daily.
Restylane and Perlane are cosmetic dermal fillers used to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Each is made from hyaluronic acid (a natural substance found in our bodies) but differ in gel particle size. Carol will determine which is best for your particular needs. Each lasts approximately 6-8 months depending upon the patient and area injected.
Juvederm is a smooth gel filler also made from hyaluronic acid. The production technology creates a high degree of cross-linking that promotes a long duration of its effect. It is the only hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has FDA approval for lasting up to one year.
Radiesse is a dermal filler that demonstrates a higher level of Viscosity and Elasticity than other leading hyaluronic acids (HA), making it more ideal for volumizing. Radiesse filler can provide immediate and full aesthetic correction in just one syringe in most patients.
All available fillers are injected with or contain Lidocaine (an FDA- approved numbing agent) for our patients comfort.
Wrinkles including frown lines are caused by overactive facial muscles. Static wrinkles are visible at all times whereas dynamic wrinkles are expression lines that deepen with facial movements. Both types of wrinkles can be improved with Botox Cosmetic or Dysport injections. Both are purified proteins that temporarily improve the appearance of skin lines and wrinkles in some areas of the face. They are injected directly into the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles blocking chemicals in the muscles that cause movement. The effect is different than that from dermal fillers which add volume to your face above the muscles. Dr. Spies will help you to determine which is most safe and effective for your individual needs.

Dr. Robert Spies is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. He is able to achieve beautiful and natural results by combining art with science. He is passionate about his work and dedicated to each patient's outcome and well-being. With over 24 years of experience, Dr. Spies is regarded as one of Arizona's most respected Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Spies received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1979. He then successfully completed both a general surgery and plastic surgery residency; the latter at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has served as an officer in the past for both the Maricopa County Plastic Surgery Society as well as the Arizona Plastic Surgery Society.
Dr. Spies has been a Plastic Surgeon since 1986 performing both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. His practice now is primarily cosmetic; however, he still does reconstructive surgery for cancer patients (breast cancer as well as head and neck cancer). He is one of only a few surgeons in the Valley who performs microsurgery for head and neck cancer reconstruction. He believes that all people requiring cancer reconstruction deserve care and treatment just like those who seek cosmetic plastic surgery.
A commitment to a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important aspects in life for Dr. Spies. He exercises daily and enjoys hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and golf. He has competed several times in the Arizona Rock and Roll Marathon as well as the Phoenix Bouldering Competition for outdoor rock climbing. Recently, Dr. Spies became involved in organic farming at his home to further enhance his health and nutrition.
