Meet Dr. Spies
Robert J. Spies, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Robert Spies began his plastic surgery practice in 1986. He specializes in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. He believes that patients who seek surgical correction and improvement from changes due to cancer, physical trauma or congenital deformity deserve the same care and treatment as those who seek cosmetic plastic surgery. Both types of patients will see dramatic improvements in self-image and esteem. His office is located in Paradise Valley, Arizona just adjacent to Paradise Valley Cosmetic Surgery Center. This center offers state-of-the art care in both the operating room center and post-operative care. After surgery, many patients spend the night at the center in a relaxed setting with personalized medical care.
Dr. Spies received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1979. He completed a general surgery and plastic surgery residency (total 7 years of training after medical school), the latter at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Through this extensive training, he has achieved board certification in both general surgery and plastic surgery. His awards include the American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award.
Dr. Spies is very active in his profession and in the community. He has donated his time and skills performing surgical procedures on children with birth defects in Mexico as well as performing laser treatments in Phoenix for ex-gang members to remove tattoos that are no longer desired. He was one of the first doctors to be involved in this city-wide program that helps these young men and women start over and improve their life. He has served as president of the Maricopa County Plastic Surgery Society and vice president of the Arizona Plastic Surgery Society.
A commitment to lead a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important aspects in life for Dr. Spies. He exercises nearly every morning and likes to rock climb, mountain bike, golf and weight train. Dr. Spies has competed several times in the Arizona Rock and Roll Marathon and the Phoenix Bouldering Competition for outdoor rock climbing. He believes recommending a healthy lifestyle for his patients is easier to do when he himself commits to the same regimen.
